The Discipline of Gaming

Tutorial, hint, walk though, cheat sheet, spoiler.

“Wax on wax off, the discipline of gaming Grasshopper.” Okay that was a reference from two different movies/shows but it seemed to fit. In my gaming entertainment over the years I have often found myself hitting the proverbial “brick wall”, especially if it was a puzzle based game. “Where is the damn key located to unlock this step?”

Struggling with clues or the strategy within a game can be frustrating. Not being able to advance means we play that scene or sequence over multiple times. I can see the Game character that we are playing, finally stop and stare at us through our monitor and scream “THE KEY IS OVER THERE DUMMY!”

This of course would creep me out so, as not to a ire the little person I am moving around in game I would look for, “Dun..dun..Duh!” the Spoiler. This of course would give me the answers I needed to advance to the next section of game-play, but was very anti-climatic. In my early days of gaming spoilers were hard to come by and I was actually glad. Now we have an abundant of spoilers for almost every game. It is too easy to cheat. A disciplined gamer will achieve their gaming goals without the need of “Spoilers”, and I have found that to be very rewarding.

I am not the Mr Miyagi of gaming, not even close but I have learned a valuable lesson. Patience is the key. When we accomplish the hurdles that most games set for us, it means that we have fully savored and enjoyed what it had to offer.

I have spent literally weeks at a dead end trying to figure out what I needed to do and when I finally figured it out, I woke the whole house up with “Eureka, I have found it!” . ..okay, I never say eureka, but it was a scream of excitement. Several deep breaths later and as my heart settled back into my chest, all I could think of was “Damn, what a rush.” This game lasted longer than any game I had played. I felt like I truly experienced the game as it was meant to be instead of fast forwarding to the end.

Our entertainment purchase is wasted if we fast forward to their conclusions. It is like buying a movie to just fast forward to the good parts. That moment of entertainment becomes just that, a moment.

I Was There...

Creativity is intelligence having fun.
Creativity is intelligence having fun. (Photo credit: symphony of love)
Being creative is an ability we all have. How that “creativity” presents itself, how it may be expressed or shown varies. For some it is a passing thought, to others it develops. Books, movies, paintings, drawings are the outlets used to share what develops.

It's winter here, stepping out my back door there are several inches of snow. It's breezy and very cold. I noticed one lone dried leaf slowly travel along the bottom of my chain link fence. The night sky, the cold and the contrast of the dried leaf against the snow was the beginning of a story or an ominous scene from a movie. My imagination placed me in a different time and place.

I love those moments because for a brief instant all of my senses are in a story. I am sure this is how it all begins. When they find themselves immersed in a moment that floods their senses, they begin to write, draw, create. I can create my own world, even if it's a passing thought but I love to visit others who have truly developed theirs.

I love the books/movies/art. For me its a view from the outside, a spectator enjoying what is getting presented. Gaming entertainment allows me to participate, to move through and interact with the world that has been created. What a dismal life would it be without an imagination or the chance to be creative.

A Perfect game is like the perfect pie, and I like pie.

I have heard it called Minecraft on steroids.

EverQuest Next Landmark is SOE's  next chapter in the Everquest Franchise. EverQuest Next and EverQuest Next Landmark's game play is described as an Adventuring/crafting/harvesting/building sandbox as seen here. SOE being a major contributor to the MMO market, has once again taken the spotlight in touting “Pioneer” or “ Time for some new ideas in the genre and if someone is going to do it, it should be EverQuest.”

Ingredients are very important as with any recipe. Mom's homemade chocolate pie (which is to die for) is not only about ingredients but proportions and how the ingredients are added. Landmark's main ingredients are destructibility and a procedurally generated world. What we are uncertain of, are proportions and application.

We have a general idea though videos and interviews but without tasting it for ourselves, we don't know what is too much or what is too little. If all or most of the landscape is destructible, in a world which traveling is essential, it may be a challenge to find your way back without road signs or points of interest. “I turned left at the big tree or hill but its gone now.” We know the world heals itself but will it reset back to its original state. In a sense this does add flavor to adventuring but if there is an ever changing landscape it may be frustrating. Landmark is an ever changing world and being in pre-alpha development also means, its an ever changing world.

SOE's desire to include the masses (with a cover charge for entry)in an early alpha state is also something new. A chance for the player base to help in development, ideas and testing is exciting and even more so for SOE fans. It does seem that a new direction is wanted, warranted or needed in this genre of game play. Old EverQuest fans are hoping to re-capture their first love. New and old gamers are looking for something different than what they have been experiencing. Is this the “Holy Grail?”

When Landmark is released and we set our eyes on EverQuest Next, will the true replay-ability without the grind finally exist? Will we actually find ourselves in a world that is truly ever changing? It will be the Holy Grail if all the ingredients and proportions are properly applied.

Following SOE and the EverQuest Franchise for over 14 years has yielded more good times than bad, and I have complete confidence in their development team. I know what a perfect chocolate pie tastes like and I like pie. I don't know how a perfect game feels like but maybe I will get a chance to find out.

Time is not free..

Trying to set time aside to for a relaxing round of whatever game you enjoy can be challenging.

The early years seemed much kinder. I remember long hours on the weekend.
Eating was a quick fix or ordered out, and unless the house was on fire, interruptions were dealt with harshly.

It didn't help, or may have contributed to the madness of gaming, that my wife loved to game as well. Six hours of sleep was all we wanted through our gaming weekends, six hours for the whole weekend. We were younger then and time seemed to be free. With (gaming) Family and friends who had the same weekend ritual, we all had a lot of fun and some great memories.

Time Bandits
Time Bandits (Photo credit: Wikipedia)
These days time isn't free. There is always something that tries to use the time you set aside for a bit of “game on”. There are many desperate attempts to slide into your fav computer chair, but usually foiled at the last minute.

Stealing is the only way. Learn to be a Time Bandit

I know I should be cleaning out the garage this Saturday but it can wait until next week. See what I did there? Yep, I just stole some time and it's relatively legal, depending on your relationship with your soul mate. It's not a bad thing having a somewhat busy lifestyle as long as your "Thief" skills are adequate.

We all need “our” time and if it comes down to being "Time Bandits" (that movie sure was a lot more funny the first time I saw it) then its a just cause. Sometimes no matter how bad you want to relax and game, there is some “time” that is more important.

I need to excuse myself, I have 2 things that are patiently waiting for my time.

Boss Mob with a guitar??

Every MMO I have played there has always been that memorable BOSS MOB. Not because of how difficult or the way a group would have to defeat it, but it's presence. Yeah I know that's weak at best, but I am always impressed by presence.

Its all about the presence.

I could write about all the boss mobs I have witnessed in all of their grandeur but that's not the direction I am going....(sound of tires screeching to a stop, usually the stupid noise we make that sounds like Eerrt!)

With my passion for gaming and love for music I was curious of who would have made great Boss Mobs..

Stevie Nicks – (the Witch Queen)

Ozzie Osbourne ( C'mon, nothing more to say here)
Cover of Ozzy Osbourne

Elton John – (the tricky jester type)

Elton John

...just to name a few but most artists can fulfill any role in an MMO. It would be interesting to see how a gaming world could be filled with artists of today.

Justin Bieber would most definitely be a minion or trash mob to kill repeatedly for quest progression, I'm just saying.

Apologies for being quiet and the “Closet Drive By” edition...

This is your LAST CHANCE. After this, there is...Image by kirainet via FlickrHope the Holidays are going well with everyone, time with family, friends and a little R&R. Life has been busy here, along with the Holidays I am the proud owner of new work hours. Naturally being thankful for being employed, but trying to adjust to the “Rabbit Hole”, I was hoping for the “Blue Pill”.

Down the Rabbit Hole?Image by FadderUri via Flickr

It's the overnight shift that I am trying to get used to and it's turned my world upside down. I have no doubt that I can adjust, millions of people have, it's just getting there. I miss my pod-casts and time on air and hope to be up and running again soon after all, new is just around the corner.

We are creeping up to the New Year and very soon the busy season will be behind us. I like new stuff because it's...well...it's new. The New Year is like a blank piece of paper, empty, unexplored newness to create whatever we are able to create.

The old piece of paper is marked with mistakes and corrections, our finest moments, accomplishments and the occasional “Oops”. The old paper is wrinkled from use and completely covered, no room for anything else, it's now old and used. It's what we do with the old that determines how we take care of the new.

Some will just toss the old paper away because after all, it's old. Others will smooth out the wrinkles, frame and hang it where they can use it for reference. I don't think there is a right or wrong way, only your way. Some are very confident on how the old piece of paper was used and shred it with the other unneeded documents on life. I fall into the paper hoarder crowd.

My file cabinet looks like someone eating with their mouth full, it's a small 2 door file cabinet with 3 decades of old paper. For me it has nothing to do with confidence, I just enjoy seeing where I have been. I can't wait for the New stuff, I cant wait to get used to the Rabbit Hole and I can't wait to see what my hobby, “Massive Multiplayer Online Games”, have coming in the new year.

Whatever your hobby, your get away, your R&R may be, I hope it's always fresh and new.

Happy New Year.

Music/Song/Artist Spotlight of the week.

Randall William Rhoads (December 6, 1956 – March 19, 1982)
Classical Music, Artistic freedom and a legend is born
Getting a spot with the Ozzman, 2 albums and 3 years later it all comes to an end.

At the age of 14 Rhoads formed a cover band called Violet Fox (after his mother's middle name, Violet), with his older brother Kelle on drums.
Violet Fox staged several performances in the "Grand Salon" at Musonia, Delores Rhoads's music school.
After the dissolution of Violet Fox, Rhoads taught his best friend Kelly Garni how to play bass, and together they formed a band called The Whore (rehearsing during the day at Rodney Bingenheimer's English Disco, a famous '70s Hollywood nightspot), spending several months playing at backyard parties around Los Angeles. Together the pair went on to form Quiet Riot when Rhoads was 16.

In 1979, ex-Black Sabbath singer Ozzy Osbourne was forming a new band...
Randy Rhoads departed for the UK to write and record with Osbourne in November 1979.
The band, then known as The Blizzard of Ozz headed into the studio to record the band's debut album, which would also be called Blizzard of Ozz. Rhoads's guitar playing had changed due to the level of freedom allowed by Ozzy and Bob Daisley and he was encouraged to play what he wanted. His work with Quiet Riot has been criticized as being "dull" and did not rely on classical scales or arrangements.

Episode 7

Hello Closet'teers...

Yes, it was decided that our listeners are Closet'teers. It was just invented and I blame Mike...and you can too.
Social Network Gaming was our first topic. This was taken from an article by Dan Gallagher on Market Watch.
Social Networks, The Next Big Gaming Cycle
Follow the Money, is the Game going Social?”

These investors are not looking to sink money into the next PlayStation or Xbox game; rather, they are looking for the next Zynga -- the San Francisco-based company that makes "Mafia Wars," "FarmVille" and other social-network games. Still privately held, Zynga landed $180 million in funding late last year from Digital Sky Technologies, or DST, the Russian outfit that also bought a large stake in Facebook.

Media reports said the investment gave Zynga a market valuation between $1.5 billion and $3 billion. The company reported 100 million unique monthly users in November, and reportedly has about $250 million in annual revenue.

If the money is with games on the Social Network are other games in jeopardy?

What is the draw with Social Network Games?

Is this another gaming avenue or a where gaming is going.
Facebook and Privacy Breach? We side stepped this topic due to time.

Music topic of the week

“Rock Star Screw Ups, That Went Vinyl”
According to The Beatles: The Biography, Ringo recorded 18 takes of the drum part on September 9, 1968. The very last take was the one used for the master recording, and it’s also the one in which Ringo performed one of the greatest tantrums in rock and roll, screaming out “I’ve got blisters on my fingers!” at the end of the take. You can hear Ringo’s outburst at 4:24.
.and others

10. The Beatles – “Helter Skelter” (The Beatles, 1968)
Helter Skelter” is one of The Beatles’ most frenzied songs – in fact, a case could very well be made that it has a lot in common with the prototypical heavy metal that would soon follow. One of the most fiery aspects of the tune is the intense drum performance by Ringo Starr.

9. Joe Satriani – “Surfing with the Alien” (Surfing with the Alien, 1987)
Joe Satriani’s sci-fi tones and out-of-this-world phrasing aren’t just the result of inspiration and perspiration – sometimes a little bit of serendipity and a whole lot of electronic malfunction play a role, too. For the lead guitar tone on Surfing with the Alien’s title track, Satriani used a wah-wah pedal and a harmonizer. The former worked perfectly, while the latter was in its death throes. Satriani told Guitar World, “The sound that came out of the speakers blew us away so much that we recorded the melody and the solo in about a half-hour and sat back and went, ‘Whoa! This is a song, man!’” Then the harmonizer broke down and couldn’t be fixed. “We couldn’t do anything,” he said. “We lost our tone. When we finally got it working again, we weren’t able to recreate the original effect. It just sounded different. So rather than screw up a wonderful-sounding performance that may have had a couple of glitches, we decided to just leave it, because it was just swinging.”

8. Frank Zappa – “Muffin Man” (Bongo Fury, 1975)
Frank Zappa often said he saw lyrics as a necessity that he didn’t quite enjoy. In his autobiography The Real Frank Zappa Book he said he felt that if he had to write lyrics, he might as well make them something that appealed to his particular skewed worldview. Nowhere is this more evident than the monologue at the start of “Muffin Man,” where the text and the voice he reads it in so appeal to Frank’s worldview that he breaks character to laugh at himself (0:48), before saying “Let’s try that again” and giving the line another shot.

7. Megadeth – “Paranoid” (Nativity In Black, 1994)
Megadeth’s take on this Black Sabbath classic was recorded for an all-star tribute which also featured Type O Negative, Sepultura, Biohazard, White Zombie, Corrosion of Conformity, Ugly Kid Joe, Faith No More and others. Megadeth’s version of “Paranoid” was a little faster and a lot angrier than Sabbath’s 1970 original, and the anger was ratcheted up tenfold when drummer Nick Menza continued playing by himself after the song was supposed to have ended (2:23-2:30). Menza is cut off by Dave Mustaine shouting “Nick… Nick …NICK!” – and when he realizes his mistake Menza berates himself with some choice words of his own.

6. Metallica – “The Four Horsemen” (Kill ’Em All, 1983)
One of the most unique features of Metallica’s classic track “The Four Horsemen” is its distinctive simultaneous two-headed guitar solo, heard from 4:10 to 4:30. You can hear two Kirk Hammetts, one in each speaker, playing roughly similar but still quite different solos. In 1991 Hammett told Guitar World this cool effect was entirely a fluke. After recording two takes of the solo, Hammett and Co. were trying to decide which one to use. “I listened to both tracks at once, to see if one would stand out,” Hammett said. “But playing both tracks simultaneously sounded great, and we decided to keep it like that on the record. Some of the notes harmonized with each other, and I remember Cliff [Burton, bassist] going, ‘Wow, that’s stylin’ – it sounds like Tony Iommi!’”

5. Steve Vai – “Sex & Religion” (Sex & Religion, 1993)
These days Devin Townsend is known as a heavy metal auteur, solo and with Strapping Young Lad. But when he was 20, Townsend found fame as the singer in Steve Vai’s band, alongside T.M. Stevens on bass and Vai’s fellow Zappa alumni Terry Bozzio on drums. A vocal follow-up to Passion & Warfare was always going to be a bold move for Vai, but nobody was prepared for the hyperactive Townsend, who soared into gorgeous melodies before plummeting down to the lowest pits of hell with piercing screams, often in the space of a single bar. At the end of the album’s title track, Townsend really goes for it with a perfectly pitched but very intense melodic scream which lasts for a whole 18 seconds (from 4:05 to 4:23) – and he doesn’t quite make it back. Townsend passed out after the take, and Vai kept some of what he said after he came to. “Oh I hurt your brain? Oh. My fingers are numb… right now, they’re numb… can I deprive my brain of oxygen?”

4. The Police – “Roxanne” (Outlandos d’Amour, 1978)
Roxanne” is a classic for its melody, its vocal performance, its orchestration and the instrumental timbres, but it’s also unique for a different reason. The mysterious piano chord heard at 0:04 is an unusual, atonal cluster that has nothing to do with the rest of the song. So what gives? Well it turns out Sting slinked back to relax on a nearby piano but didn’t realize the lid was up, so he unwittingly played that gloriously dissonant chord with his butt. This also explains his laugh at 0:06.

3. Led Zeppelin – “Babe I’m Gonna Leave You” (Led Zeppelin, 1969)
Babe I’m Gonna Leave You” is an eerie, moody track to begin with, but if you listen very closely you’ll hear a ghostly voice at 1:43. What is it? A backwards-masked magic spell? Some kind of ghostly incantation? Nope. That’s actually the sound of Robert Plant singing along with drummer John Bonham during tracking, and there was no way to delete Plant’s singing from the drum tracks. Whether that’s his actual naked voice leaking through the drum mics, or perhaps being blasted through Bonzo’s headphones, perhaps we’ll never quite know, but it sure sounds cool, and adds yet another interesting layer to discover among Led Zep’s tapestry of orchestration.

2. Radiohead – “Creep” (Pablo Honey, 1993)
One of the most unique parts of Radiohead’s hit “Creep” was the salvo of chunky, deadened notes played by Jonny Greenwood right before the chorus at 0:58, and again at 2:00. Bandmate Ed O’Brien told Selectmagazine that Greenwood’s ear-catching decision was actually born of frustration. “That’s the sound of Jonny trying to [expletive] the song up,” O’Brien said. “He really didn’t like it the first time we played it, so he tried spoiling it. And it made the song.”

1. Van Halen – “Everybody Wants Some” (Women and Children First, 1980)
This Van Halen classic features oodles of the loose party vibe the band were known for in the early days – you can almost hear the clinking of beer bottles and the boogying of bikini babes. Almost. One thing you can most definitely hear though is the sound of David Lee Roth totally flubbing a lyric. According to his autobiography, Crazy From the Heat, the line was supposed to be something along the lines of “I’ve seen a lot of people just looking for a moonbeam.” But that’s not what came out. Instead, at 1:58, Dave sang something resembling “Ya take a moople-ah, wookie pah-a moopie.” The band decided that the vibe of the new line worked just as well, and the messed-up take was left in the song, an enduring legacy to just how hard Van Halen rocked it.

Making money because it's free...

The Lord of the Rings Online: Shadows of AngmarImage via WikipediaLord of the Rings Online Executive Producer announced that they have doubled their revenue since changing over to "Free to Play", the technical term is "hybrid micro transactions-based business model".

Turbine has done very well with both products, Dungeons and Dragons Online and now LotRO. This is the perfect answer to all of those that wish to play several games at their own pace and not having to commit to a monthly payment. It seems to be more palatable to spend $3.00 for game content in a 60 day period or even some cool cosmetic piece of gear that all the cool Dwarfs are wearing these days.
Yes, we will spend money because that is our nature.

Now don't misunderstand, LotRO can be played without spending a dime. As you complete certain quests or Deeds your rewards are Turbine points(in game currency) and this can be used too purchase content as you level your character. In all of the MMO's I have experienced over the years there is one thing I have noticed, I have never completed all of the in game content that was available.

Keeping up with the crew, friends, family, my game junkie wife (now that was a match made over a board and dice game) we would out level the area, get bored with the scenery and want to see something new. The result was always the same, unfinished content. LotRO for free means devouring every morsel of content that the developers have provided. Your bouncy little Hobbit or brutish dwarf will have to drain each game play area dry.

A new revelation for me but known to everyone else. The content is supposed to be experienced. Every little story, event and breathless moment is to be enjoyed. Thats why they spent the time in writing it. This has created a new focus for me and my little Hobbit lady who follows me everywhere. Free or not, lets stop and smell the roses and feast on everything the games have to offer.

With the success that Turbine has had with D&D Online and LotRO I hope that other companies will follow suit. I can think of several games I would still be in if there was a "hybrid micro transactions-based business model". For now we will just enjoy our time in LotRO besides, my wifes Hobbit is so hot.

Art's Closet Episode 5

Art's Closet 10-6-2010

If you missed The Escape Show on Wednesday night the Harmilkyway/Harmilk bits will not mean anything to you. We follow the Escape Show on Wednesday nights and they always leave us with a great lead for our show....sometimes.

Game topics from the week.

Panasonic is throwing their hat into the gaming device arena again. The last time was the 3DO which was decent but carried a hefty price tag that left it sitting on the shelves in most cases.

Still we cant see the Jungle for the Trees, no detail on specs and the only info we are getting is what we can see from the device. Micro USB, HDMI, headphone jack and maybe an aux jack.
  1. True mobile MMO? What is it going to need?
    1. Great screen resolution: If not, then whats the buzz. Other handheld's already have a start. In order to hit the mainstream Kick Ass MMO crowd, I would imagine that it would need to run existing MMO's. If we are going to have to wait for specific MMOS to be developed then this Jungle is DOA.

    2. Great Processing power: Along with kick ass video, one would need kick ass processing power. Okay, maybe kick but processing power. Mid Range processor, Intel Core i5 perhaps. As an MMO gamer for me to give this a second glance, means that I can run my present gaming addictions.

    3. This needs to be a Laptop that has been splashed with the latest shrinking potion, otherwise..I will just use my Laptop for any mobile gaming needed.

    4. Apple and Oranges: The big player right now is the Nintendo 3DS. This little powerhouse has been given great reviews from E3. Imagine 3D without the need for glasses. Given the competition is still Handheld Gaming, the 3DS offers more, of course the Jungle is MMO games only, MMO games only.

      No life in the Jungle.
Without having the full details it's difficult to say where this will end up. There are several that have already sent flowers and expect a DOA device.

I try to picture my day to day MMO life in the Jungle and I cant see the Jungle for the trees.
Game of the week:
8 bit Mania” ..another 8bit virtual world. Mario meets Everquest meets Zelda meets Legos meets Minecraft.

Developed by Indie game developer Calvin Goble. Calvin Goble Interview

The game’s been in open beta since September 17, 2009

Neverdaunt: 8Bit is a sandbox MMO with an open world and vibrant 8-bit inspired 3D visuals.

Utilizes Actor Player Characters – Real players playing in Character. Sort of character in character This is needed more often in MMO's

Tronics - You can use Tronics to do amazing things. Wire up trap doors, invent a game, lock things with passwords... Its an in game visual programming language, and it takes some skill to learn, but is very rewarding when you figure it out.

Overall this looks to be a very entertaining game

Music/Song/Artist topics of the week.
Artist/Song of the week:
Turn off the AC, Joe's in town” Joe Satriani
13 Solo albums
4 Compilation albums
4 Live albums

A career that has a 26 year resume. 1984-2010

We always seem to talk about “Signature sound” This week is no different.
You may not be able to name a song credited to Satriani, but if you hear one, you can't mistake the sound.

Interesting Facts:
1984, Joe released a self-titled five-song EP on his own Rubina label, and the following year completed his first full-length album Not Of This Earth, which was financed on a credit card and released in 1986 on Relativity Records.
Ibanez JS Series Guitars; Satch's weapon of choice.

Joseph "Joe" Satriani (born July 15, 1956 in Westbury, New York) is an Italian American multi-instrumentalist, known primarily for his work as an instrumental rock guitarist, with multiple Grammy Awardnominations. Early in his career, Satriani worked as a guitar instructor, and some of his former students have achieved fame with their guitar skills (Steve Vai, Larry LaLonde, Kirk Hammett, Andy Timmons,Charlie Hunter, Kevin Cadogan, Alex Skolnick). Satriani has been a driving force in the music credited to other musicians throughout his career, as a founder of the ever-changing touring trio, G3, as well as performing in various positions with other musicians.

Satriani was inspired to play guitar at age fourteen soon after learning of the death of Jimi Hendrix. He has been said to have heard the news during a football training session, where he confronted his coach and announced that he was quitting to become a guitarist.
In 1974, Satriani studied music with jazz guitarist Billy Bauer and with reclusive jazz pianist Lennie Tristano. The technically demanding Tristano greatly influenced Satriani's playing. Satriani began teaching guitar, with his most notable student at the time being fellow Long Island native Steve Vai. While he was teaching Vai, he was attending Five Towns College for studies in music.
