Episode 7

Hello Closet'teers...

Yes, it was decided that our listeners are Closet'teers. It was just invented and I blame Mike...and you can too.
Social Network Gaming was our first topic. This was taken from an article by Dan Gallagher on Market Watch.
Social Networks, The Next Big Gaming Cycle
Follow the Money, is the Game going Social?”

These investors are not looking to sink money into the next PlayStation or Xbox game; rather, they are looking for the next Zynga -- the San Francisco-based company that makes "Mafia Wars," "FarmVille" and other social-network games. Still privately held, Zynga landed $180 million in funding late last year from Digital Sky Technologies, or DST, the Russian outfit that also bought a large stake in Facebook.

Media reports said the investment gave Zynga a market valuation between $1.5 billion and $3 billion. The company reported 100 million unique monthly users in November, and reportedly has about $250 million in annual revenue.

If the money is with games on the Social Network are other games in jeopardy?

What is the draw with Social Network Games?

Is this another gaming avenue or a where gaming is going.
Facebook and Privacy Breach? We side stepped this topic due to time.

Music topic of the week

“Rock Star Screw Ups, That Went Vinyl”
According to The Beatles: The Biography, Ringo recorded 18 takes of the drum part on September 9, 1968. The very last take was the one used for the master recording, and it’s also the one in which Ringo performed one of the greatest tantrums in rock and roll, screaming out “I’ve got blisters on my fingers!” at the end of the take. You can hear Ringo’s outburst at 4:24.
.and others

10. The Beatles – “Helter Skelter” (The Beatles, 1968)
Helter Skelter” is one of The Beatles’ most frenzied songs – in fact, a case could very well be made that it has a lot in common with the prototypical heavy metal that would soon follow. One of the most fiery aspects of the tune is the intense drum performance by Ringo Starr.

9. Joe Satriani – “Surfing with the Alien” (Surfing with the Alien, 1987)
Joe Satriani’s sci-fi tones and out-of-this-world phrasing aren’t just the result of inspiration and perspiration – sometimes a little bit of serendipity and a whole lot of electronic malfunction play a role, too. For the lead guitar tone on Surfing with the Alien’s title track, Satriani used a wah-wah pedal and a harmonizer. The former worked perfectly, while the latter was in its death throes. Satriani told Guitar World, “The sound that came out of the speakers blew us away so much that we recorded the melody and the solo in about a half-hour and sat back and went, ‘Whoa! This is a song, man!’” Then the harmonizer broke down and couldn’t be fixed. “We couldn’t do anything,” he said. “We lost our tone. When we finally got it working again, we weren’t able to recreate the original effect. It just sounded different. So rather than screw up a wonderful-sounding performance that may have had a couple of glitches, we decided to just leave it, because it was just swinging.”

8. Frank Zappa – “Muffin Man” (Bongo Fury, 1975)
Frank Zappa often said he saw lyrics as a necessity that he didn’t quite enjoy. In his autobiography The Real Frank Zappa Book he said he felt that if he had to write lyrics, he might as well make them something that appealed to his particular skewed worldview. Nowhere is this more evident than the monologue at the start of “Muffin Man,” where the text and the voice he reads it in so appeal to Frank’s worldview that he breaks character to laugh at himself (0:48), before saying “Let’s try that again” and giving the line another shot.

7. Megadeth – “Paranoid” (Nativity In Black, 1994)
Megadeth’s take on this Black Sabbath classic was recorded for an all-star tribute which also featured Type O Negative, Sepultura, Biohazard, White Zombie, Corrosion of Conformity, Ugly Kid Joe, Faith No More and others. Megadeth’s version of “Paranoid” was a little faster and a lot angrier than Sabbath’s 1970 original, and the anger was ratcheted up tenfold when drummer Nick Menza continued playing by himself after the song was supposed to have ended (2:23-2:30). Menza is cut off by Dave Mustaine shouting “Nick… Nick …NICK!” – and when he realizes his mistake Menza berates himself with some choice words of his own.

6. Metallica – “The Four Horsemen” (Kill ’Em All, 1983)
One of the most unique features of Metallica’s classic track “The Four Horsemen” is its distinctive simultaneous two-headed guitar solo, heard from 4:10 to 4:30. You can hear two Kirk Hammetts, one in each speaker, playing roughly similar but still quite different solos. In 1991 Hammett told Guitar World this cool effect was entirely a fluke. After recording two takes of the solo, Hammett and Co. were trying to decide which one to use. “I listened to both tracks at once, to see if one would stand out,” Hammett said. “But playing both tracks simultaneously sounded great, and we decided to keep it like that on the record. Some of the notes harmonized with each other, and I remember Cliff [Burton, bassist] going, ‘Wow, that’s stylin’ – it sounds like Tony Iommi!’”

5. Steve Vai – “Sex & Religion” (Sex & Religion, 1993)
These days Devin Townsend is known as a heavy metal auteur, solo and with Strapping Young Lad. But when he was 20, Townsend found fame as the singer in Steve Vai’s band, alongside T.M. Stevens on bass and Vai’s fellow Zappa alumni Terry Bozzio on drums. A vocal follow-up to Passion & Warfare was always going to be a bold move for Vai, but nobody was prepared for the hyperactive Townsend, who soared into gorgeous melodies before plummeting down to the lowest pits of hell with piercing screams, often in the space of a single bar. At the end of the album’s title track, Townsend really goes for it with a perfectly pitched but very intense melodic scream which lasts for a whole 18 seconds (from 4:05 to 4:23) – and he doesn’t quite make it back. Townsend passed out after the take, and Vai kept some of what he said after he came to. “Oh I hurt your brain? Oh. My fingers are numb… right now, they’re numb… can I deprive my brain of oxygen?”

4. The Police – “Roxanne” (Outlandos d’Amour, 1978)
Roxanne” is a classic for its melody, its vocal performance, its orchestration and the instrumental timbres, but it’s also unique for a different reason. The mysterious piano chord heard at 0:04 is an unusual, atonal cluster that has nothing to do with the rest of the song. So what gives? Well it turns out Sting slinked back to relax on a nearby piano but didn’t realize the lid was up, so he unwittingly played that gloriously dissonant chord with his butt. This also explains his laugh at 0:06.

3. Led Zeppelin – “Babe I’m Gonna Leave You” (Led Zeppelin, 1969)
Babe I’m Gonna Leave You” is an eerie, moody track to begin with, but if you listen very closely you’ll hear a ghostly voice at 1:43. What is it? A backwards-masked magic spell? Some kind of ghostly incantation? Nope. That’s actually the sound of Robert Plant singing along with drummer John Bonham during tracking, and there was no way to delete Plant’s singing from the drum tracks. Whether that’s his actual naked voice leaking through the drum mics, or perhaps being blasted through Bonzo’s headphones, perhaps we’ll never quite know, but it sure sounds cool, and adds yet another interesting layer to discover among Led Zep’s tapestry of orchestration.

2. Radiohead – “Creep” (Pablo Honey, 1993)
One of the most unique parts of Radiohead’s hit “Creep” was the salvo of chunky, deadened notes played by Jonny Greenwood right before the chorus at 0:58, and again at 2:00. Bandmate Ed O’Brien told Selectmagazine that Greenwood’s ear-catching decision was actually born of frustration. “That’s the sound of Jonny trying to [expletive] the song up,” O’Brien said. “He really didn’t like it the first time we played it, so he tried spoiling it. And it made the song.”

1. Van Halen – “Everybody Wants Some” (Women and Children First, 1980)
This Van Halen classic features oodles of the loose party vibe the band were known for in the early days – you can almost hear the clinking of beer bottles and the boogying of bikini babes. Almost. One thing you can most definitely hear though is the sound of David Lee Roth totally flubbing a lyric. According to his autobiography, Crazy From the Heat, the line was supposed to be something along the lines of “I’ve seen a lot of people just looking for a moonbeam.” But that’s not what came out. Instead, at 1:58, Dave sang something resembling “Ya take a moople-ah, wookie pah-a moopie.” The band decided that the vibe of the new line worked just as well, and the messed-up take was left in the song, an enduring legacy to just how hard Van Halen rocked it.

Game topics from the week.

Gods and Heroes:Rome Rising The Second Coming
Perpetual Entertainment closes, leaves Gods and Heroes shelved.
Heatwave Interactive is reviving the IP.

Usually, when a game company goes under and the products in development aren’t picked up right away, that’s all there is to it.  Players looking forward to that title now have to move on, because the product will never see the light of day.  Heatwave Interactive decided to buck that trend and acquired Perpetual’s Gods & Heroes about a year ago.”

What was Gods and Heroes -

But first, here's a refresher on the game. Gods and Heroes is being labeled as an Action/Adventure MMOG. This is due to its realistic combat system. The animations are more than your standard repetitive sword strikes. Some of the normal combat skills, or "feats," include wrestling grapples with sleeper holds and eviscerating sword plunges reminiscent of something you'd see in God of War.

The Demise -
San Francisco-based developer Perpetual Entertainment has pushed back the release of its PC MMORPG Gods and Heroes: Rome Rising, due to the need for further beta testing.
This is the second time the target launch has been delayed; the prior incident coincided with layoffs at Perpetual in December 2006.
Perpetual Entertainment has announced that it has ceased development of Gods & Heroes: Rome Rising - MMO scheduled for release on PC in 2008. In a post over on the game's official community website, Perpetual president Chris McKibbin revealed that the development team's efforts would be better used on the upcoming Star Trek Online and the company's Online Game Platform business.
The recent debate brought about by Jeff Gerstmann's dismissal from Gamespot has focused a lot of attention on the role of advertiser manipulation of reviews. Now a lawsuit brought by PR firm Kohnke Communications against what remains of Perpetual Entertainment has unveiled an interesting element of their business relationship. From the language of the agreement:"Kohnke's public relations campaign was successful in creating pre-release 'buzz' around Gods & Heroes, and in convincing reviewers to write positive reviews about the game. In addition, on information and belief, Perpetual had signed up more than 100,000 beta testers for Gods & Heroes, a large number for an unreleased MMO."
A lawsuit filed by industry public relations firm Kohnke Communications against former Star Trek Online developer Perpetual Entertainment has reportedly been dismissed in court following a mutual resolution by both parties.

According to multiple sources, P2 Entertainment (formally Perpetual Entertainment) has officially closed their doors. This means an end to all projects, including their planned focus on casual games. There is no indication at this time what it means for the Perpetual Platform, which had been licsened to studios like Bioware Austin.

The Awakening -
PC MMO Gods and Heroes: Rome Rising has been rescued by developer Heatwave Interactive, which has acquired the game as well as multiple licenses for its engine technology. Now, development is back underway.
Artist/Song of the week:
Carlos Santana”
40 years and 28 Solo Albums
Carlos Augusto Alves Santana (born July 20, 1947) is a Mexican American rock guitarist. Santana became famous in the late 1960s and early 1970s with his band, Santana, which pioneered rock, salsa andjazz fusion. The band's sound featured his melodic, blues-based guitar lines set against Latin and African rhythms featuring percussion instruments such as timbales and congas not generally heard in rock music. Santana continued to work in these forms over the following decades. He experienced a resurgence of popularity and critical acclaim in the late 1990s. Rolling Stone named Santana number 15 on their list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time in 2003.  He has won 10 Grammy Awards and 3 Latin Grammy Awards.

In 1966, he gained prominence by a series of accidental events all happening on the same day. Santana was a frequent spectator at Bill Graham's Fillmore West. During a Sunday matinee show, Paul Butterfield was slated to perform there but was unable to do so as a result of being intoxicated. Bill Graham put together an impromptu band of musicians he knew mainly from the Grateful Dead, Butterfield's own band and Jefferson Airplane, but he had not yet picked all of the guitarists at the time.

Santana's manager, Stan Marcum, immediately suggested to Graham that Santana join the impromptu band and Graham assented. During the jam session, Santana's guitar playing and solo gained the notice of both the audience and Graham. During the same year, Santana formed the Santana Blues Band, with fellow street musicians, David Brown and Gregg Rolie (bassist and keyboard player, respectively).

With their highly original blend of Latin-infused rock, jazz, blues, salsa, and African rhythms, the band (which quickly became known simply as Santana) gained an immediate following on the San Francisco strip club. The band's early success, capped off by a memorable performance at Woodstock in 1969, led to a recording contract with Columbia Records, then run by Clive Davis.

Bill Graham, who had been a fan of the band from the start, convinced the promoters of the Woodstock Music and Art Festival to let them appear before their first album was even released. They were one of the surprises of the festival; their set was legendary and, later, the exposure of their eleven-minute instrumental "Soul Sacrifice" in the Woodstock film and soundtrack albums vastly increased Santana's popularity.

First Album Santana 1969 - “Evil Ways”, “Jingo”, “Soul Sacrifice”
Second Album Abraxas 1970 - “Black Magic Woman”, “Oye Como Va”
*Third Album Santana III 1971 - “No One to Depend On”, “Everybody's Everything”.

*It was the third and last album by the Woodstock-era lineup, and it was also considered by many to be the band's peak commercially and musically, as subsequent releases aimed towards more experimental jazz and Latin music. The album featured two singles, "Everybody's Everything" (solo by Neal Schon), which hit #12 in October 1971, and "No One To Depend On" (again with solo by Schon), a staple in FM radio. This is the first album to feature 17-year-old Neal Schon on guitar. In 1972 he and Gregg Rolie left the band to form Journey.
..70's
1972 saw creative differences in the band and a musical change with Carlos Santana. Jazz, Eastern Indian and classical influences.

Most-notable of the band's commercial efforts of this era was a version of the 1960s Zombies hit, "She's Not There", on the 1977 album Moonflower.

The pressures and temptations of being a high-profile rock musician and requisites of the spiritual lifestyle which guru Sri Chinmoy and his followers demanded, were great sources of conflict to Santana's lifestyle and marriage. He was becoming increasingly disillusioned with what he thought was Chinmoy's unreasonable rules imposed on his life, in particular, his refusal to allow Santana and Deborah to start a family. He felt too that his fame was being used to increase the guru's visibility. Santana and Deborah eventually ended their relationship with Chinmoy in 1982.

..80's
Santana again paid tribute to his early rock roots by doing the film score to La Bamba
Blues for Salvador album 1987 won the '89 Grammy for Best Rock Instrumental Performance, Santana's first Grammy.

1999 Supernatural - 15 times platinum; collaborators, Rob Thomas, Eagle Eye Cherry Dave Mathews, Everlast.
2002 Shamana Mix of hip hop, rap and pop artists; Michelle Branch “the Game of Love” first single
2005 All that I Am -  "I'm Feeling You", features Michelle Branch and The Wreckers, The second single of the album, "Just Feel Better", features Steven Tyler of Aerosmith
2010 Guitar Heaven - The Greatest Guitar Classics of All Time, referred to as simply Guitar Heaven, is the eighteenth studio album by Carlos Santana, released on September 21, 2010. It is a classic rock covers album and features guest performances by several popular vocalists, including India.Arie, Chris Cornell, Scott Stapp, Scott Weiland, Chris Daughtry, Jacoby Shaddix, Chester Bennington, Rob Thomas, and rapper Nas.

Making money because it's free...

The Lord of the Rings Online: Shadows of AngmarImage via WikipediaLord of the Rings Online Executive Producer announced that they have doubled their revenue since changing over to "Free to Play", the technical term is "hybrid micro transactions-based business model".

Turbine has done very well with both products, Dungeons and Dragons Online and now LotRO. This is the perfect answer to all of those that wish to play several games at their own pace and not having to commit to a monthly payment. It seems to be more palatable to spend $3.00 for game content in a 60 day period or even some cool cosmetic piece of gear that all the cool Dwarfs are wearing these days.
Yes, we will spend money because that is our nature.

Now don't misunderstand, LotRO can be played without spending a dime. As you complete certain quests or Deeds your rewards are Turbine points(in game currency) and this can be used too purchase content as you level your character. In all of the MMO's I have experienced over the years there is one thing I have noticed, I have never completed all of the in game content that was available.

Keeping up with the crew, friends, family, my game junkie wife (now that was a match made over a board and dice game) we would out level the area, get bored with the scenery and want to see something new. The result was always the same, unfinished content. LotRO for free means devouring every morsel of content that the developers have provided. Your bouncy little Hobbit or brutish dwarf will have to drain each game play area dry.

A new revelation for me but known to everyone else. The content is supposed to be experienced. Every little story, event and breathless moment is to be enjoyed. Thats why they spent the time in writing it. This has created a new focus for me and my little Hobbit lady who follows me everywhere. Free or not, lets stop and smell the roses and feast on everything the games have to offer.

With the success that Turbine has had with D&D Online and LotRO I hope that other companies will follow suit. I can think of several games I would still be in if there was a "hybrid micro transactions-based business model". For now we will just enjoy our time in LotRO besides, my wifes Hobbit is so hot.

Game topics from the week.

Panasonic is throwing their hat into the gaming device arena again. The last time was the 3DO which was decent but carried a hefty price tag that left it sitting on the shelves in most cases.

Still we cant see the Jungle for the Trees, no detail on specs and the only info we are getting is what we can see from the device. Micro USB, HDMI, headphone jack and maybe an aux jack.
  1. True mobile MMO? What is it going to need?
    1. Great screen resolution: If not, then whats the buzz. Other handheld's already have a start. In order to hit the mainstream Kick Ass MMO crowd, I would imagine that it would need to run existing MMO's. If we are going to have to wait for specific MMOS to be developed then this Jungle is DOA.

    2. Great Processing power: Along with kick ass video, one would need kick ass processing power. Okay, maybe kick but processing power. Mid Range processor, Intel Core i5 perhaps. As an MMO gamer for me to give this a second glance, means that I can run my present gaming addictions.

    3. This needs to be a Laptop that has been splashed with the latest shrinking potion, otherwise..I will just use my Laptop for any mobile gaming needed.

    4. Apple and Oranges: The big player right now is the Nintendo 3DS. This little powerhouse has been given great reviews from E3. Imagine 3D without the need for glasses. Given the competition is still Handheld Gaming, the 3DS offers more, of course the Jungle is MMO games only, MMO games only.

      No life in the Jungle.
Without having the full details it's difficult to say where this will end up. There are several that have already sent flowers and expect a DOA device.

I try to picture my day to day MMO life in the Jungle and I cant see the Jungle for the trees.
Game of the week:
8 bit Mania” ..another 8bit virtual world. Mario meets Everquest meets Zelda meets Legos meets Minecraft.

Developed by Indie game developer Calvin Goble. Calvin Goble Interview

The game’s been in open beta since September 17, 2009

Neverdaunt: 8Bit is a sandbox MMO with an open world and vibrant 8-bit inspired 3D visuals.

Utilizes Actor Player Characters – Real players playing in Character. Sort of character in character This is needed more often in MMO's

Tronics - You can use Tronics to do amazing things. Wire up trap doors, invent a game, lock things with passwords... Its an in game visual programming language, and it takes some skill to learn, but is very rewarding when you figure it out.

Overall this looks to be a very entertaining game

Music/Song/Artist topics of the week.
Artist/Song of the week:
Turn off the AC, Joe's in town” Joe Satriani
13 Solo albums
4 Compilation albums
4 Live albums

A career that has a 26 year resume. 1984-2010

We always seem to talk about “Signature sound” This week is no different.
You may not be able to name a song credited to Satriani, but if you hear one, you can't mistake the sound.

Interesting Facts:
1984, Joe released a self-titled five-song EP on his own Rubina label, and the following year completed his first full-length album Not Of This Earth, which was financed on a credit card and released in 1986 on Relativity Records.
Ibanez JS Series Guitars; Satch's weapon of choice.

Joseph "Joe" Satriani (born July 15, 1956 in Westbury, New York) is an Italian American multi-instrumentalist, known primarily for his work as an instrumental rock guitarist, with multiple Grammy Awardnominations. Early in his career, Satriani worked as a guitar instructor, and some of his former students have achieved fame with their guitar skills (Steve Vai, Larry LaLonde, Kirk Hammett, Andy Timmons,Charlie Hunter, Kevin Cadogan, Alex Skolnick). Satriani has been a driving force in the music credited to other musicians throughout his career, as a founder of the ever-changing touring trio, G3, as well as performing in various positions with other musicians.

Satriani was inspired to play guitar at age fourteen soon after learning of the death of Jimi Hendrix. He has been said to have heard the news during a football training session, where he confronted his coach and announced that he was quitting to become a guitarist.
In 1974, Satriani studied music with jazz guitarist Billy Bauer and with reclusive jazz pianist Lennie Tristano. The technically demanding Tristano greatly influenced Satriani's playing. Satriani began teaching guitar, with his most notable student at the time being fellow Long Island native Steve Vai. While he was teaching Vai, he was attending Five Towns College for studies in music.

Welcome to the Jungle

“Welcome to the Jungle” - This is Jungle. It's the first portable gaming console designed exclusively for online gaming and MMORPGs.

Panasonic is throwing their hat into the gaming device arena again. The last time was the 3DO which had healthy competition, carried a hefty price tag and was left sitting on the shelf  in most cases.

There are no details on specs and the only info we are getting is what we can see from the device. Micro USB, HDMI, headphone jack and maybe an aux jack.

This is a great concept that has been hit and miss for the last few years. Simple graphics, stand alone gameplay, co-op gameplay, Browser based but with extras. Videos, Camera, Web Browsing, E-mail, Music....Phone!

Panasonic's target is On-line gaming and MMORPG's. Is it just me or is it all in the wording.

On-line gaming and MMORPG are not essentially the same thing. Zynga products are on-line gaming, Lord of the Rings Online is an MMORPG, see the difference?

I'm not trying to bury this before it actually dies but I do have my doubts. Do people really want to play Age of Conan on the bus? Oh wait, is Age of Conan going to be Jungle friendly?

True mobile MMO? What is it going to need?

Great screen resolution: If not, then whats the buzz. Other handheld's already have a start. In order to hit the mainstream Kick Ass MMO crowd, I would imagine that it would need to run existing MMO's. If we are going to have to wait for specific MMOS to be developed then this Jungle is doomed.

Great Processing power: Along with kick ass video, one would need kick ass processing power. Okay, maybe kick butt processing power. Mid Range processor, Intel Core i5 perhaps. As an MMO gamer, to give this a second glance means running my present gaming addictions. This needs to be a Laptop that has been splashed with the latest shrinking potion, otherwise..I will just use my Laptop for any mobile gaming needed. Of course if its running Linux as an OS maybe the processing power isn't needed, but the 3G needed may. This is truly a Jungle.

Apple and Oranges: The big player right now is the Nintendo 3DS. This little powerhouse has been given great reviews from E3. Imagine 3D without the need for glasses. Given the competition is still Handheld Gaming, the 3DS offers more, of course the Jungle is On-line MMORPG games only, On-line MMORPG games only, On-line MMORPG games only. Thats how the features will be listed.

No life in the Jungle?

Without having the full details it's difficult to say where this will end up. There are several that have already sent flowers and expect a DOA device. A keyboard is what makes this an MMO device. Due to the fact that the trend is "Touch Screen" this was the only thing, so far that made sense. A keyboard and/or controller is not something that is "touch screenable" for this lifetime.

The ability to play my fav MMO's, on a hand held device, with the resolution that we have
achieved in gaming, at my family reunion or dinner at the in-laws, makes me break out in a cold sweat. We would have arrived at the next evolution of mobile gaming., but as I try to picture my day to day MMO life in the Jungle, I cant see the Jungle for the trees.
